I am running a 1.4 Ghz, Dual G4 Mac, OS 10.3.9. I just connected to the project and so far every WU that has been sent has errored out with a computation error. I followed the instructions for installation but something is clearly wrong. Is the Mac application ready for prime time?

Regards
Phil

There is a problem with 10.3.x not completing. It is being worked on. The app works fine so far with 10.4.x

Actually I started another thread on this in the crunchers corner. The problem was that the original system requirements stated that the system would work on Mac OS 10.3x and up. Well it obviously didn't. I am aware they are working on this issue. Originally it was ahead of the Windoze optimized app, but now it is in at least the number two slot. I guess I just wait and see. I have too much other stuff going on to upgrade to 10.4x right now. Besides it costs a lot to replace all the software after an upgrade, and my systems are working well right now. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

Phil

They have come out with a new 4.76 app. I am still clearing my queue of 4.75 work, so don't know yet if that fixes the 10.3.x issue or provides any optimization. Should know a little by the end of the day though. If you download new work now, you should get the new app and maybe could test it to see if it works with 10.3.9. If Ithink that was the goal for that new app version.

Oh, I have also discovered that if you are running multiple projects, you may need to increase the time between project switching to 2-3 hours (from the default of 1 hour) to make any real progress on some Macs. Otherwise it seems to get stuck at 75-83.3%, and will fall back to the last checkpoint (75% or 83.33%) on each switch.

Well I am going to give it a try. I have reset the project, and am waiting for it to load. I may have to suspend some other projects to get it set up. If it gives me a WU I will know in about 10 seconds if its fixed for 10.3.9. I'll report any results.

Phil

No Joy on the new rev of the Mac App. There is one thing that seems to be a little different though. The WUs error out even before they complete the download. This would indicate to me that there may be some file left in the BOINC system that is not being reset that keeps the error from the last WU. I am checking the XML files that I can grab (before they are gone) to see if I can find anything.

Phil

Update - I just tried turning off image verification. With this turned off the WU actually completes the download. They still error when the App starts to crunch them but at least they finish the download. I will check the errors to see if anything is in there.

This is the WU without Image checking - https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=47468

This is one with - https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=47410

The errors are the same. Turning off the check just allows the system to complete the download before it finds out there is a problem.

Hmmm! Not seen that before. Does seem like they maybe didn't get the 10.3.x issue fixed yet. The new app is faster then the old though on 10.4.x. David Kim is on vacation but I think He will be back next week. Maybe he can make some sense of it.

I have the same problem on my 10.3.9 laptop. David K. tried to get OS X 10.3.9 to work before he left but ran out of time. 10.4.0 works fine; the rest of us will have to wait until David gets back.

David,

Thanks for the note. I know David K. is busy, and we just have to wait. I would point out that in my experience this project has the most responsive project team among the major BOINC projects that are currently on line. So I for one am not willing to push you guys on this. I have every faith that you know we are here and ready to support your work, and that you will take care of these issues as soon as time permits. That you all for your efforts.

Besides it is only fair that the Mac folks give the Windoze folks a good head start on the crunching. LOL

Regards
Phil

I have (almost) no problems running rosetta 5.43 under 10.4.8 on a intel mac. However it works as long as i don't set it as screensaver or open the graphics. After a while a graphics window is open, the simulation will end and give a computation error. Surely looks like a bug in the usage of the glut api. I don't have the same problem in a winxp machine
