You can, in your general options, set a "write to disk at most every".

This will allow your disk to spindown, if you've got enough memory.

I've got 1.2GB and even when I moved my entire BOINC directory to a network drive, and set the preference to write only every half hour, and my disk never spins down. In another post someone said if it's your only drive then it won't, because Windows has too many other background tasks popping in and out. And in fact I confirm in the task manager, when I add the PF Delta column (go in to the View menu option to add it), and other tasks won't leave the drive alone.

So, it seems the power setting is really for when you have a second drive. And the disk being active has little to do with BOINC.

To answer your question, yes everything on a computer runs in the memory and the CPU. But Windows uses the hard drive to hold anything that it can't fit in memory at the moment. This takes time to write things to the disk and then bring back other information when a task that was in progress several minutes ago pops in to do something more. This is why it often helps your PC run faster if you have more memory. Because it can retain more of what it is working on, without using the disk as often.

If you power down your computer, then the current model will be lost.

If your disk powers down due to being idle, it will automatically power up again when an application needs it for anything.

Are you running more than one project on your system? If so it is possible that the system has decided to run the other projects for a while. This can happen if you have been running one project for a while and the system determines that the settings you have for sharing your computer between projects dictate that it should work on one project in particular to catch up on time it owes to that project.

When this happens your system may not connect to Rosetta to get new work if your computer Owes time to another project. If that is what is happening it should work out by itself. If not then you may want to shutdown your computer and restart it to see if the problems clears.

I'm not getting anything. No messages, no jobs, (the ones that were in the cue are gone) nothing but can't connect to server. Which looks to me like it's saying BOINC can't connect to my computer. Localhost. I had this problem one other time but I can't remember if it just connected or I reinstalled it.

It did freeze before I rebooted and then it could not connect, or was just stuck on the work unit. It was sitting for about 61 hours on one unit at 1.03%.
I rebooted and it went to 1.04% and sat, I did a couple things and rebooted and BOINC never connected again. It's almost as though the program can't find the w.u.'s

Rosetta is all that's running here.

I've rebooted a few times. Nothing.

Some MS (microsoft) product is grabbing port 1043 during the boot process before boinc can get it. Port 1043 was assigned from IANA to Boinc, but MS does what they want. I suspect you've either just installed boinc or have performed a windows update reasonably recently.

Boinc has chosen to start using port 31416 instead and have been doing so since Developmental release somewhere around 5.3.?. Boinc version 5.4.6 (the latest developmental release) can be downloaded from here.

NOTE: this is developmental software, use at your own risk.

that said, it's been working fine for everyone I know, and has cured the problem you're seeing for many.

I test the new Boinc software as a volunteer. I've see no showstoppers reported with this version, so no need to worry (not much anyway). LOL

you will actually do more damage than good, a running disk doens't use much, but one that's starting and stopping all the time will use quite a lot (it takes a lot of power to get the platters spinning, but not much to keep them spinning)

also by having your hard drive spin up/down constantly you'll shorten it's life, and it'll fail sooner (as in break, and you'll loose any data on it)
