From Rom: Howdy Folks, I'm pleased to announce that BOINC 5.4 has been released on Windows, Linux, and Mac. This version has a little bit of something for everyone. Here is a quick summary of new features: 1. You can use your favorite account manager to easily attach to new projects. Please see BOINC for a list of account managers and what they could be used for. 2. Better personal firewall support for the screensaver. For those who were experiencing lockups when the screensaver was activated, this release should fix that problem. 3. Preferences can be overridden when a global_prefs_override.xml is specified. Please see Preference Override. 4. Better notification about BOINC's network access needs. 5. SOCKS5 proxies should now work properly. Many small bug fixes went into the release to improve the overall quality of our software. We hope everyone like the result. If you use a proxy server you should hold off on upgrading until we have resolved an issue with NTLM authentication. We should have a fix available in a few days. The development team would like to thank all those involved with testing the latest generation of BOINC clients. Without all your hard work we wouldn't have as high of quality product as we do today. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team Space Sciences Laboratory U.C. Berkeley NOTE: the link isn't working for me currently. I've emailed Rom. tony |

Some of the Changes in 5.4.9: A different port number, only port 31416 is used. This to prevent hijacking the port number by the OS or other applications and BOINC Manager saying it can't contact the client. The traffic you see on your firewall is because the Boinc Manager's Task tab is now updated every second. So each second, Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe communicate with eachother. (Note: Leaving Boinc Manager open on the Tasks tab, when you have over 0.5 days worth of queue can take up some CPU cycles due to the refresh.) The screensaver will now also give an RPC out, so your firewall software knows it is starting. This to prevent a hanging screensaver when you try to return to the desktop. In case of a client_state.xml file corruption, due to you needing to reboot or a crashing OS, upon the next start of BOINC, the client_state.xml file is checked. If found corrupt, it's discarded and the contents of client_state_prev.xml is used to startup with. New statistics. New names for several menu items. New and clearer error messaging. Some errors are now just warnings. You can use the Account Manager. At this moment only BAM is semi-live: http://bam.boincstats.com (registration is closed again) Network tracing built into the client. (see version details) JM7 fixed several bugs in the work scheduler. Further available changes in the version details. |

Also Apple users will need to read their changlog (it's slightly different), many the Intel/PPC alteration. The traffic you see on your firewall is because the Boinc Manager's Task tab is now updated every second. So each second, Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe communicate with eachother. (Note: Leaving Boinc Manager open on the Tasks tab, when you have over 0.5 days worth of queue can take up some CPU cycles due to the refresh.) I thought they reduced this in the later builds (they cam so fast I forget) anyways if any one want to read the full changlog http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/boinc/checkin_notes?rev=1.3587 but that's only since the new year, the pre new year id there also ;-) To Seti/Einstein users reading, Note your optimised clients (Crunch3rs) will not work well with this, since BoincManager cannot communicate with it. Only Truxoft 5.3.12.tx36 works with this, but you do not want to over write the boinc.dll If you do want to use Account Managers properly you need to use 5.4.9 since the older version do not communicate well with it. Now we need to produce or point to detailed instructions for people to properly perform the upgrade to the new BOINC release... starting at how to check the release you have now, and going through how to download the new one, ending BOINC, and how to install it without disrupting the projects. If anyone feels up to it, please post the details or a link to something with this level of detail. I won't lay it out for the users of the Optimized Boinc core clients, but if you use the regular boinc "official" releases it's easy. 1) exit boinc (file-exit, or right click on "B" in systray, pick exit) 2) download and run 5.4.9 3) select appropriate choices in MSI installer 4) if you use a firewall it should detect the change in the programs and prompt you, allow boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe, and boinc.scr access to the internet. 5) you're done NOTE: if you move forward in boinc versions you do not need to uninstall the older versions, but if you go backwards you do. |

Downloaded it onto one machine, and the first thing it did was throw the machine into EDF, for no apparent reason. The machine is not overcommited, and would easily have cleared the deadlines present. -1 The faster update is more natural to watch. +1 The lost "column sorting" that we used to have in BOINC 3 has still not returned. -1 The time to completion looks better. +1 Off topic, hi Tony, normally used to seeing you over at Seti... You keep him here! Over at the Seti boards, any of the "heavy" members got involved in a thread, and the thread degenerated to uselessness in seconds. Tony was a breath of fresh air, always helpful without being sarcastic/caustic/bitter. Tony, there's a beer over in the bar for you mate. "I gotta remember, never go to the Cafe', never go to the cafe', unless you're going all the way" "Kurtz went to the cafe' and he split from the whole program" We'll Seti has a bunch of people who've been around Boinc since the start. I seem to be of more help here(not that I don't have 6 forum screens up most the time anyway). |

I've been around since pretty much the start of S@H, let alone BOINC, but believe there is no excuse for the nastiness that exudes from the forum there. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

To Seti/Einstein users reading, Even when the .dll was not overwritten the tx36 client did not communicate with Boinc Manager. It would run and would start the apps but just not talk with Boinc Manager. So I had to remove the tx36 client and now I can't calibrate the Einstein WUs. Of course the Seti no longer should be calibrated. Anyway, I hope there will be a new calibrating client sometime soon and I'll just run a straight 5.4.9 Boinc until then. |

Strange, close BoincManager then restart often work (it sometimes get's stuck) though tx37 (beta drop down, seems to work as I just tested for you :-)) As I said, not everything works, % transfer being one of them. You will probably find BoincStudio will have a calibrating client first AND they are pretty much designing it around Einstein anyway. Of course it's easier if you read french ;-) But don't worry about the manager, just get the client. Thought it's a t 5.2.13 at the moment But to be fair there is not much point updating just to get a newer BoincManager. tony, (and all) You can actually just run the install program (Windows) and it takes care of shutting down boinc/boincmanger/sopping service. Couldn't be easier :-) Saves the need to describe closing boinc. Even my CPDN never crashed when doing that many times (which I'm happy to say reached 100% yersterday) ---- The lost "column sorting" that we used to have in BOINC 3 has still not returned. -1 Since it wasn't in 5.2.13 you can hardly take a point away more a "=" But from the dev list, I believe we're never going to get it. Though since IBM/WCG are putting time behind a new BoincManger (prettier, more friendly) the whole thing may change anyway. Team mauisun.org |

Since it wasn't in 5.2.13 you can hardly take a point away more a "=" Very true, I stand corrected. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Since it wasn't in 5.2.13 you can hardly take a point away more a "=" Though I do hope they fix it soon :-) (I assume it is something to do with the widgets they use, I remeber a member(s) at FaD work hard for some sorting code for that exact thing, If I can find it it may help them out. It was for much the same coloumn sort thing. Though it'll be in Delphi/Pascal coding) But I've started using BoincView locally (always used it for looking at all the copmuter at one) more now he's developing it again. 1.3x branch has stopped but 1.25 has been released as is being worked on :-) Account Manager updates, port updates and coloumn sorting Team mauisun.org |

Anything I can do? I can program Pascal/Delphi, (Fortran, C, C++, VB, Perl...). It struck me as odd that the feature went. It is a fairly standard feature with most grid controls/widgets. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Anything I can do? I can program Pascal/Delphi, (Fortran, C, C++, VB, Perl...). I don't know, I guess download the source for boinc manager and have a look (C++) and if you fix it post it on the 'dev list' (you'll find out where and what at boinc website) I do not know who is in charge of 'BoincManager' Team mauisun.org |

Coming into this a bit late, but I'm a firm believe in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." 5.2.11 works just fine for me. Is there any reason I would want to upgrade? |

Coming into this a bit late, but I'm a firm believe in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." completely voluntary, of course. I've used them all as a Boinc beta tester. Quite frankly I'm getting old and don't remember all the changes since 5.2.11. I know the stats tab is much better. It uses a different port. When your puter crashes, it no longer corrupts the "clientstate.xml" file, so no more lost work. Basically a butt load of little stuff. |

It also seems to bring a reference implementation of a BOINC project server. So if contact to a project server fails, it then tries the reference server and thus can conclude if you have a networking issue, or a project outage and so the resulting messages are more specific.
