The BOINC Manager stops responding within 2 minutes after I open an Internet Explorer window. I have to close it using Windows Task Manager. Earlier this week, before this problem started, I installed PeoplePC software, then uninstalled that. I have also installed this month's Microsoft Windows XP updates and Office 2003 updates. Today, I uninstalled the BOINC Manager software and reinstalled it. Same problem. This is on Rosetta ver 5.25, an HP laptop, and Windows XP Media Center 2004. The BOINC Manager is ver 5.4.9. Thanks, Karl Loucks |

Are you running any of the BOINC graphics? Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

Are you running any of the BOINC graphics? No, just the BOINC Manager itself. |

Not a solution but a possible workarround : You could start BOINC.exe (instead of BOINCmgr.exe) and use BoincView to control it. I gave up using BOINCmgr for remote control because it gets unresponsive when I open the "Select computer" form and type in the first letter. Each keystroke takes up to 5 minutes(!) before it shows in that form. No such problems with BoincView 1.2.2 so far, I use it with BOINC CC 5.2.12 |

Is it possible I need to open a port in my Windows Firewall? Which ports do Rosetta and BOINC Manager need to have open? |

Is it possible I need to open a port in my Windows Firewall? Which ports do Rosetta and BOINC Manager need to have open? Rom Walton (THE boinc programmer} stated the following: BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages. He posted this back before the Major Version 5 core clients were fully integrated, so, your version 5.4.9 uses 31416 and keeps 1043 as a back up. hope this helps tony |

I believe I have stumbled upon a solution. I thought back over the descriptions of the various XP patches I had recently installed, and realized they had all been aimed at closing various "entry points" for hackers, where they could gain control over a machine using "specially crafted" scripts, URL's, whatever. So, I figured, if we're closing "entry points", maybe the BOINC folders somehow had been closed to BOINCManager, as well. So I shared the BOINC folder in the Program Files folder, and all the subdirectories, and the BOINCManager runs like a champ! Hope this helps others. Karl |

Is it possible I need to open a port in my Windows Firewall? Which ports do Rosetta and BOINC Manager need to have open? Tony, Is the UDP or TCP ports? Being BOINC illiterate, I couldn't find the post that you were speaking of. I'm having the exact same problem with my 'puter. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Steve |

Tony, I've covered this several times, and to save typing it again, I'll point you to the place. It's here. If you still have a problem or need me to walk you through any of it, I will. You might read the first post to see if it's the same problem your having, but it's interesting/helpful info to know. Welcome to Rosetta Stephan. tony |
