Just wondering... I am currently running two projects, Seti and Rosetta which I give both equal time computing. The question below is based on the recent addition of Rosetta to BOINC. I am running v5.4.9, AMD 64 3000+, 512Mb RAM, Win XP Home SP2 (with latest updates).

My question is, why does BOINC now insist on pinging the internet before I can switch between either project. This is time consuming and frustrating as whatever it is looking for can take up to a minute. When it finds whatever it is, then I can highlight the project I would like to view my results on, clicking tabs across top, tool bar, settings, or whatever the case may be.

Mind you, I experienced this in the older versions of Seti solely or jointly when I was running Climate Prediction. They've updated something, because I no longer experience this when Seti operates by itself on my other PCs.

Is there a setting or something I can do on my end to assist BOINC on finding whatever it is its looking for? Any assistance is appreciated. And CTRL-ALT-DEL or FORMAT C: doesn't work... ;)

BOINC tries to reach a reference server as it tries to decide if there's a basic network problem or if there's a problem on the project server side. It should not contact this reference server just in order to switch between projects though, that sounds more like an unwanted side effect of some other change.

There is a discussion board for BOINC issues where you can help improving BOINC : dev_create_account_form.php

In addition, they have BoincZilla, where you can report BOINC related problems.

As the source code is freely available, you can even suggest changes on source code level, which especially in case of bug fixes is sure very welcome as it saves their menpower.

Just figured out what was causing BOINC to hang.

Playing with the settings under the ACTIVITY tab, I noticed that both were set to "Run based on preferences". So I first changed the setting to "Run Always". No change, still hung. So then I changed the other setting to "Network Activity Always Available". VIOLA!! No hang!! Went back to the port settings and removed the ones I added as mentioned in a different post. Still works like a champ.

So my recommendation would be to set the way you want BOINC to run locally, and ignore those settings that are web based.
