Hello Rosetta,

currently there is a servere issue under discussion on the team rechenkraft messagebord about one team-member whos' credits have been cancelled.

We would like to have an explanation and a good reason (user caught cheating heavily would be such an explanation), but without such a good explanation many folks at rechenkraft.net consider giving up Rosetta.
Here is what Boincstats tells:
http://www.boincstats.com/stats/user_graph.php?pr=rosetta&id=67205

As you can see, from 299.385 to 38417 total credits is quite a jump, and in the wrong direction.
That user was set down to at least 300 credits or less. Why?
This is the rosetta userid:
https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_user.php?userid=67205

He is already the user with highest RAC again at rechenkraft.net.

We as team rechenkraft.net would like to know what is going on.

Greetings groundhog

This looks like an obvious case of cheating:

BoincStats shows he has 4 hosts connected to Rosetta (they're hidden here)

On the 10th his credit/day was 6,200 - on the 11th it was 62,500.

Found at Einstein, SZTAKI has the same boxes but with different results:

PowerMac4,4 (ID=578000) :

Measured floating point speed 49507.27 million ops/sec (used to be ~1807.05)
Measured integer speed 51580.78 million ops/sec (used to be ~3584.89)

PowerMac3,5 (ID=575382) :

Measured floating point speed 45433.29 million ops/sec (used to be ~1536.97)
Measured integer speed 53364.94 million ops/sec (used to be ~3068.73)

PowerMac4,4 (ID=614806) :

The user had one computer that I had to remove because the iops looked ~1000 fold too high. I decided to divide the totals by 1000 to account for this. I do not know if it was intentional so I can't say if it was cheating. The user has since re-registered a computer that is again not acceptable w/ an iops of 1551365433558.92. The user is getting ~8000 credits per work unit! I will remove the account and adjust the totals, including the team totals.

This is most likely one of those hosts at Rosetta : hostid=285085

Back with a RAC of 5,194.54, which is nearly exactly the same RAC as that of the user in question.

Measured integer speed 1551365.43 million ops/sec

Thank you, that is after all the right thing to do. Too bad it is necessary to remove the account, but it is.

Wow,
That must be some kind of super computer to have a floating speed ,I cannot understand why someone would cheat. This must be an error.Myself, just reopened my account after Ralph ran out of work.Have a question regarding this HUGE w/u I got for my first-one, will go to the correct thread. Please people, there Boinc
is no place to cheat, that is why this makes no sense.Good-luck Team rechenkraft.net with this issue. This has to be an error, but that is definetly the
most rediculous floating.

Is there cheating regarding this user?

Sincerely
Doug*

The situation with that computer was solved. That is all that should matter.

I just want to say at the outset that I have the greatest respect for the goals of the ROSETTA Project.

But, as silly as I know credits are, it is still a measure of one's "performance", whatever that means, in crunching numbers. And I try to watch for the updates to BOINC overall and the different project apps to stay current.

Here is just another example of getting half or less the credit in Rosetta versus other projects. Please note the times involved..I get across the board approx the same credits for the time involved except for Rosetta..

Rosetta: BOINC 5.4.11 WU ..27,586 sec....54 credits

Rosetta: BOINC 5.3.12 tx36 WU....28,884 sec....111 credits

E @ home: BOINC 5.4.11 WU ...30,121 sec....175 credits

E @ home: BOINC 5.3.12 tx36 WU ..29,333 sec..177 credits

And these results are similiar in other projects I participate.

A little difference is one thing, a lot of difference is an entirely different animal. I apologize ahead of time if I have offended anyone for this "numbers for numbers only approach". I respect the goals of Rosetta, but I run this little PC 24 hrs a day...one has to make choices...

I ran into this half credit with Rosetta when I updated from BOINC 5.3.12 to 5.4.9 about a month ago. When I saw those half credits appear, I changed BOINC back to 5.3.12. But, for better or worse, I think BOINC 5.4.11 is a better platform overall and I am staying with it.

Hello Stan,
You are right, this is an exeptinally great experiment with the greatest scientists, crunchers, staff, forum reps, etcc.I know that credits are not an issue with most people.Lots of farms out there, and when you want to "Compete" and
not to be able to use your 1 P.C.to send Emails , surf, download songs etc......
So, running Rosetta, which compared to most other experiments ,especially
Einstein.I receive 20 credits for 5000 seconds of work on average. As much as I know this experiment is beneficial too many people, not all that good for 1 P.C. clients crunching 23 hours, and surfing etc, for 1 hour a day.1/2 the credits
of other experiments!I also hope a Linux user can reboot a rosetta w/u without
fubared sesults.Cause I just did,"even with app saved in memory on your general preferences tab!
Sincerely
Doug*

Hey Doug....Appreciate your comments...by the way.. noticed that you are using BOINC 5.4.9, there is an issue with McAfee Virus on that platform

I also noticed on the preceeding thread that they are using a core client called 5.5.0 and getting similiar credits to E @ home...

I will have to ask where that core client is for download as I had not heard of it.....

Thanks Stan,
I was under the beleif that mcafee Virus ws a Windows problem. That may explain the strange behavior. But never heard of it.Thank-You for informing me.Yup, after reboot,w/u was fubarred.Downloaded another, have quit session, and will reboot again after this note. This time I "Suspended" Rosetta in the hopes that may help the problem. Please inform me further of this McaFee Virus?

The 5.5.0 was made by Crunch3r who has stopped his 'work' after some 'wars' at Seti. Cheating accusations ..... you know ...
He made an uncredible optimized application for Seti and the BOINC client to correct the credit.

Hey Doug....The McAfee Security program is for firewalls and virus control...I did not mean to make you think it was a Virus itself..just bad handling of language on my part.... Stan

I and many others agree completely. Credits and the competition they create can be a valuable incentive to join a project. Conversely, unequal awarding of credit can be an disincentive. I'm here *despite* the credits because, like you, I am excited by the work being done. But I'm not giving Rosetta as much of a share as I will once this is corrected.

BTW, Rosetta is aware of the problem and is investigating a way to correct the situation. See This Thread

Rom Walton cam out with 5.4.11 to handle a problem with "the Latest" version of Mcafee (V8 I believe). Mcafee added something new that was causing issues with boinc in general, so If you're using the latest version of Mcafee and have problems than 5.4.11 should take care of it. I think this issue applies to all previous versions of boinc, not just 5.4.9. This doesn't apply to V7 with the latest updates.

You're welcome. Yes people use it to compensate this or that.
As an example, I crunch for Sztaki where there is a huge difference in crunching time between Linux and Windows. Sometimes with a factor of 10 .... But there's no manipulation, the Linux app is quicker.
Everybody do its best , but here and there there is something a bit of demotivation for the crunchers.

Hello,
Thanks Stan,
No, I donnot need a firewall with Linux, too may partitions and stuff.Thiery, hope
you donnot mind the P.M. at home. The difference between linux and windows is
closing,Looking at other results of Linux and Widows Machines , the difference is ninimal.,but not with some of the experiments.I use the einstein app for Linux, and
belive in them, especially us with just one P.C.And farms.
But manipulating credits and benchs is wrong. The Seti app was great also ,but
all the stuff goes on,and, Politics, this is something we do for the better of our Society."Boincing" is a great resource in this world where Money rules, and Heals!
{medically}2 teered Medical,Dohh!Why cannot I reboot a Rosetta Unit?That is why I run Ralph!
All the best to all, and may good come from everything.
Sincerely
