CNN writes about Prevnar
Instead of targetting a life threatening disease, Prevnar targets a range of sinus and ear infections.

If they're able to target mere nuisance illnesses with vaccines, then hopefully it'll help improve the chances of targeting a few more of the life threatening illnesses.

How does the vaccine for a mixed range of sinus and ear illnesses compare with the future HIV vaccine we'll be helping with here at Rosetta? Are there lessons that can be applied - or has my syringe-phobia kept me from learning important information about vaccines?

Targetting "nuisance" problems or worse "lifestyle enhancing" products or even worse, "cosmetic/vanity" products is money in the bank to the big pharma companies.

If the same amount of money was spent on killers as these other things, then a lot of the killers would be in decline or gone now. The point is, the third world, which has a great need of such, can't afford to pay great sums for them.

The converse is true in the developed world, people can and will pay for "cures", (real or imaginary), for their woes.

Obesity research is big business, because too many people eat too much. In the third world, they don't always have enough to eat to simply survive. Pump westerners full of food, then charge them for a cure to their fat, win-win for big business.

Millions spent developing and buying anti-aging cosmetics/treatments, not a problem for a lot of third world people, they don't live long enough to need them.

It's all about money, and is very sad. If I was in charge things would be very different. Sorry for a bit of a rant, it is something I find deeply disturbing about humans.

Why not just get the 3rd world people to move to somewhere that can support them and doesn't have the problems they currently have ?

Not where I live, our borders are open to all (although they say they're not ;-))


But it is an alternative, plenty of room to go around. Also nuisance problems warrent a high level of research (imho). People with critical illnesses generally forget about it in a much shorter time... <i.e. they die quicker>.
This is not in reference to the people that bring it upon themselves, like smokers and obese people (but no real reason to be). That research should be lower down the priority ;-)

I don't see sinus and ear problems as "neuisances". For some people they can be very signficant.



I've had ear surgery from the impact of ear infections and have lived with chronic sinus infections all my life.

The cost of those to insurance are significant.
