Team USA Linux Users Group represents the members of http://www.usalug.org an online forum created to help Linux users everywhere. (Our members span the world and aren't just limited to the USA ;) ) We have started crunching for Rosetta the last couple of days, and it's been a minor learning curve as things obviously are a bit different from FAD. Some of the most noticiable differences are the use of BOINC and the memory requirements of Rosetta vs Think. So far, its going ok. Also, it appears that the default BOINC gives Linux users about 1/2 the points/credits that M$ users get. That is unless you compile your own BOINC and then it seems to be on a more level playing field. It appears that the default Windows client of BOINC is compiled using VB and without flags, the Linux version compiled with GCC didn't run as fast. Recompiling boinc from source code is a fairly simple process, and the results that it then produces are right in line with the M$ Windows clients. (AS it should be). I saw someone mentions something about being a "credit whore" in one of the other threads.... kind of a BAD way to think of things i think. We all crunch for a good cause, but it's the COMPETITION that keeps us interested (right pphalan ?? )... so, I don't feel BAD about compiling my BOINC client to give me the same points/credits as a comparable M$ machine would get..... so don't call me names about that.... So, if your interested in Linux, and want to crunch for team USA Linux Users Group feel free to join in with us Rosetta on usalug.org (my thread): http://www.usalug.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=70998 Rosetta Team Info Our Team Signup page: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/create_account_form.php?teamid=593 Our main Team Page: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_display.php?teamid=593&sort_by=total_credit&offset=0 Create YOUR profile page: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/profile_menu.php Stats sorted by teams with most credit/points: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit Rosetta Message Boards: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_index.php Rosetta Questions Forum: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_help_desk.php Rosetta Linux Specific Forum: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_forum.php?id=5 Rosetta ABOUT page: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_about.php BOINC BOINC-command line: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/client_unix.php Boinc script info: http://www.spy-hill.net/~myers/help/boinc/unix.html#start BOINC download page: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php I'll add more info as I go..... so far the team is in about 151st place.... and climbing. I'm having a bit of trouble with some of the older P3's.... but i think i'm just going to have to add some ram to get them going.... i think i only had about 128mb's in those (they are at work and no access till tommorrow). So.... you linux folks, feel free to join us at crunching for Rosetta, and on http://usalug.org or on irc.freenode.net #usalug Happy crunching ! last time i checked the boinc client was written in c/c++ no matter for what os, wouldn't make too much sense to port c code you have already to vb for windows... IMO -- Florian www.domplatz1.de |

it appears that the default BOINC gives Linux users about 1/2 the points/credits that M$ users get. All I need now is a command line version for my little windows herd. :) |

it appears that the default BOINC gives Linux users about 1/2 the points/credits that M$ users get. The command line version is included, it's called boinc.exe and with boinccmd.exe you do anything what you would do with the manager ;-) |
