he he he .... well, if i could convince you to join me...... ;)

Yes, we still have a couple members riding out FAD to the end (I decided not to do that..... ) ..... so once that happens hopefully can keep moving up.

We are in #25 spot, and soon to move up another notch.... ;)

Is it a HyperThreading CPU? If so, then yes... you can limit it to 1 in the preferences under "multi-cpu systems", if for some reason you want to.

You know, you and I seem to have this conversation too often....:P
No mostikes will be tolerated. You will get things in proper order OR a Vile Evil Kitty will be overnight fed-exed to you.
No more warnings will be given....LOL

Hope you had a great Christmas...

A vile evil kitty was fed x'd to me! :p
I named her Bob.
It sucks I want a computer like my sons! wah!
Why doesn't my AMD do that? It's a duel core too... sniff sniff...
seems to me that instead of messing with fixing one I need a new board.
where's santa when you need him?
Come BOINC with me!

Yes, hyperthreading gives you maybe 30% extra performance - it does two things at once and only take 50% extra time to do them both.

One reason Windows users limit to 1cpu is that on some boxes there is a noticeable performance hit to whatever work the user is doing. I have never found a need to do this on a linux box, as linux seems better at interrupt handling than even the latest windows.

In short, it's fine, only limit it if your son finds that Rosetta makes his box feel sluggish.

By the way, penguin fanciers may be interested in the following deep background briefing.

In electronic logic, a gate is some device that applies logic to its inputs.

An And Gate has two inputs. If both are on, the output is on. Otherwise the output is off. This means if the output is off you can't tell exactly what the inputs are - it could be that either is off or that they both are. You lose information.

An Or Gate is similar, except that for this Gate you lose information when the output is on: then you only know that at least one input was on, but you don't know which and it could have been both.

A Not Gate has a single output, the opposite of the input. No information is lost: if you know the output you can figure out the input. You might use another Not Gate to do that. The output from the second Not Gate is the same as the input to the first Not Gate. So feed the second output back into the first input, and you have made a memory device. Most transistor and integrated circuit memories use some form of this trick. They need Not Gates because Not Gates preserve information.

Your computer has maybe 0.5 billion bytes of memory? That is 4 billion bits, or 8 billion Not Gates. Your hardware says billions of times over: Not Gates; Not Gates to preserve information. Not Gates, therefore obviously Torvalds. Listen to the RAM ...

All of your computers except the Intel show to be single-core. If one of them is really a dual-core AMD, it _should_ show as 2 CPUs, and should be doing 2 WUs at a time - and _faster_ than a "mere" HT Intel.

Make sure your preference venues all have "2" for number of CPUs allowed, and then on this AMD you're talking about, check the BIOS and OS and see if either/both report it as a dual-core. If they don't, then BOINC can't use it that way.
