thanx guys! good to be back !!!

yeah, 30 days was a bit on the long side, but still not enough to see all of Oz.

only saw a few fairy penguins (i didn't have time for the Philips Island "Penguin Parade"), and didn't see any tasmanian devils (they're about to become extinct. big problems with contagious face cancer).

I flew into Sydney, then took the Indian Pacific (train) from Sydney to Perth (equivalent is NY to Los Angeles), 4 days / 3 nights. Flew from Perth to Darwin. Then took The Ghan (another train) from Darwin to Alice Springs, 24 hours. Spent a week in Alice, which also included side trips to Uluru (aka Ayers Rock), and camping in The Outback. From Alice, took the second half of The Ghan from Alice to Adelaide, another 24 hours. Side trip to Kangaroo Island. Then the Overland (yet another train) from Adelaide to Melbourne. Flew back and forth to Tasmania, and then another few days in Melbourne (went to a "footy" game, Aussie Rules Football) before heading back State-side. Couldn't even think about touching Queensland (Brisbane/Carins/"Great Barrier Reef") with "only" 30 days. Scuba-diving the Reef will have to be another trip, lol !!!

And "yes", I did bring some Vegemite back as "gifts", lol !!!

Gonna hafta see about getting the crunchers back up and running in another week or so.

And look what great news I return to:

Sony introduces slimmer PS3 and big price cut

But this isn’t just a price move, he said, it’s the introduction of a new hardware unit that has been reduced significantly in size. PS3 Slim is 32 percent lighter, 36 percent smaller and consumes about 34 percent less power. And it’s this new form factor that allows Sony to manufacture the PS3 at a lower cost and then pass the savings on to consumers.

A WEEK, I would have never shut mine off, let alone wait a week to start them back up! I always go on vacation and just let mine run on their own. Yes some die during the week, power supply issues, anti-virus pop-ups etc, but that is okay with me. As for the vacation did you do it by yourself? Did you have a guide like on a tour or did you take someone special and kind of wing it? I have a friend that went to Australia, over 10 years ago now, and he went alone and just kinda winged it, went wherever he felt like, did his own thing and had a great time. He even met lots of nice young ladies and spent some quality time down under!

nah, finished with the "bar scene" shortly after college.

and besides, any background info on penguins should tell you that we mate for life... (though we still are allowed to look !!!)

did the trip by myself. got a great deal on airfare from the east coast, got a rail and air pass, and had a rough idea of where i wanted to go. train schedules basically dictated my travels, as they only run twice a week.

surprisingly, there was some "culture shock" in the beginning. they may speak a similiar language, but Oz is definitely not the U.S., and you'd better be prepared for that!

was hoping that the crunchers would "auto pilot" during my absence, but i suspect a landlord unhappy with the electric bill my have "accidently" tripped a circuit while the apartment was empty. my ups's had triggered.

still in ny for another week, so the crunchers in dc are just going to have to wait. :(

That is a bummer, the landlord thing I mean!!! I always wondered what happens if you get into one of those places where you don't pay for the electricity and the landlord finds out it's you using all the power!

I would not have thought there was too much language differences, they do speak the Queen's English though, right? And trains that only run 2 days a week, that IS the Outback!!! Must have been adventure to remember though, I hope you took lots of pictures!!

Queens English with an accent that takes some time to get used to.
I once called to a IRC friend in Perth. I had a heck of a time understanding that person. Phone line was good, but the accent makes the Bronx and Jersey sound tame.

I am building my own new system! I bought a new mobo and am going down to the local computer store to make sure I get the right quad core cpu and memory for it so I can replace my wifes slow dual core Vista machine. She has Vista Home Basic on it and it is S-L-O-W!!!!!!!!! I am going to put Windows7 in a new box and see if that helps. I have Windows7 running on 2 of my machines now and I love it!!! Unfortunately though I can't put her up to the 64 bit version, she uses alot of photo programs that are just not 64 bit programs and it doesn't make sense yet. So she will be limited to 4 gig of ram, she has 2 now, which should be better. I think they make 64 bit photo programs, she just doesn't have nay of them, and she isn't making any money right now!!!!

he's a time warp penguin.
he looking back in time to see himself writing the post again after he wrote it in the future.

all that quantum physics and trans warp theory around black holes must be confusing him.
