I have a very slow dial-up computer.

I set a 'home' preference that limits the upload/download rates as follows:
Maximum download rate:	1 KB/s
Maximum upload rate:	1 KB/s

The XML file shows that the rate is set correctly:
 <max_bytes_sec_down>1000</max_bytes_sec_down>
 <max_bytes_sec_up>1000</max_bytes_sec_up>

Messages show it got the new prefs:
2005-11-23 13:01:21 [rosetta@home] General preferences have been updated
2005-11-23 13:01:21 [---] General prefs: from rosetta@home (last modified 2005-11-23 13:01:05)
2005-11-23 13:01:21 [---] General prefs: using separate prefs for home

BOINC/Rosetta will consume all bandwidth (beyond my 1 KB/s limits). Why does BOINC/Rosetta ignore these preferences?

BOINC 5.2.7 and Rosetta 4.79 on Windows XP SP2 running as a service

I also have a similar issue wher I have set in the preferences to hide the computers and they are still shown in my profile. It seem the website doesn't obey the program settings very well. Maybe the management should contact SETI@Home or one of the other larger projects for some technical assistance before I yank the program from my PC's for security reasons.

I have the same issue: I set my upload/download rate to 1kb/s but v5.01 continues to use full bandwidth for transfers, despite being in mode 'network activity based on preferences'.

As to the original question. You also have to set your local BOINC Maneger to "Run Based On Preferences".
If you fail to do that it will ignore your preferences.

As to the display computers. You will always be able to view your own computers. The hide function keeps OTHER USERS from viewing them (though I don't know why anyone would want to do that other people cannot help you if they cant see your computers)

So the only way for you to test if they can be seen would be to go to somplace like BOINCSynergy stats site, register, add this project into you preferences there and see if your computers are shown as hidden when it updates your stats.

Or you could just take my word for the fact that when I try to look at your computers they are in fact hidden.

So the server is working just fine.

When you set the new parameters in your preferences did you go to the bottom of the screen and update them? Then did you go to Boinc and hi lite the project and update it?

i have the same problem
i set the paramaters (downlaod and upload both at 2 KB/s),
clicked update at the bottom
waited for the page to refresh, then i refreshed it myself just to check
then i went to boinc,
checked "activity" tab, both run and network activity are based on preferences
hi-lighted the project,
hit update,
checked logs, which reported the preferences ahd been changed, and the new ones were being used,
yet it still ignores the max upload and downlaod rate

also, how do u distinguish between which preferences you are using, if u set up seperate ones for home/work etc

thanks

And here I am with exactly the same issue .. correctly setup, network on preferences, run on preferences, set for max up/down @ 1Kbs, but comes in @ 20Kbs+

Obviously rosetta don't actually care about those that have specific needs to limit bandwidth for an environment.
