I have been through considerable pain because I was not notified of the arrival of an important hoped for but unexpected personal message. I quit my TEAM because of this. I knew perfectly well that it was optional whether to receive notification of personal messages and I was sure that I had opted in to that. Now I have discovered that 'default' is no notification. Perhaps for TEAM PLAYERS default could be 'notification' which then could OPTIONALLY be switched off? I have rejoined my TEAM. Also - now I have to figure out whether so-called 'community' preferences affect all projects or must be set for EACH project. Also - I am rather helpless at Bulletin Board Forums and there is a good chance that if anyone replies to this note I may not be able to find said reply. I'm just throwing out this suggestion on behalf of tentative or newbie type team member users of which I am a perennial. Optimistically yours, Stepo |

I have been through considerable pain because I was not notified of the arrival of an important hoped for but unexpected personal message. I quit my TEAM because of this. I knew perfectly well that it was optional whether to If you make your changes on a Projects website those changes that affect other projects will eventually propagate to all of your Boinc projects, if however you make your changes in the Boinc Manager it is a pc by pc thing. As for how the Boinc Server software works there is a Boinc Developers mailing list you can make suggestions too. Boinc is written and distributed and then each project can either do SOME modifications or use it as is. The problem with modifying it is the net version will not have your modifications, so you end up doing them with every new release. The Boinc Server software is for the projects and is different than the one we run on our pc's, of course. Your Team should be able and happy to help you in setting things up quickly and efficiently. Most teams are really helpful and yours has enough people on it to help you if you just ask them. |

Thank you, mikey. I guess I don't know what the BOINC authors mean by 'Community.' There is the BOINC Community and there is the Rosetta (in this case)Community. I really want the default should be for 'immediate email notification' as I can protect myself from almost anything except too much protection. :^) Optimistically yours, Stepo P.s. What does the 'Subscribe' button do in this Forum? |

The subscribe button at the top of the thread, records your interest in a given thread and notifies you of any new posts in that specific thread. I believe you can make changes to some attributes across project if you are using an account manager such as BAM or grid republic. Otherwise the community settings you modify on the project's website pertain to the project's community, i.e. the message boards here. Some of the settings mikey is referring to that propagate across projects are those that pertain to how your machine runs, such as number of CPUs. I don't believe the community preferences propagate like that. Any software that is in the field and has over a million users, is unlikely to modify their default settings, even if they agree it is desirable. I just causes too many problems for the existing users. As mikey points out, the decisions about what the defaults should be rest with the BOINC developers at Berkeley. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
