On the BOINC download page (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php) there is an option to download only BOINC or BOINC+VirtualBox. Will my PC need "VirtualBox" for Rosetta@home projects? I did not see this question addressed in the FAQ. Also, on the Rosetta@home Rules and Policies page under the section "Is it safe to run Rosetta@home?", I read this: "The applications run by Rosetta@home may cause some computers to overheat. If this happens, stop running Rosetta@home or use a utility program that limits CPU usage." I don't know if I will need that utility, but the "utility program" link is dead. Is such a utility often needed? If so, could someone please tell me the name of that utility. Thanks. |

No, Rosetta@home does not need the relatively new virtual box support from BOINC. If you add other projects later, they might have different requirements. Since the time of the writing of the overheating warning & potential, BOINC Manager has added abilities to setup preferences to establish % duty cycle to run on the CPU, and establish number of CPUs to allow BOINC to use. These settings provide sufficient control to address any heat or fan noise problems you might wish to address. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Since BOINC Manager now has the option of controlling the CPU cycles, maybe it would be a good idea to simply remove the overheating warning along with the dead link. Is that something you can do, or can you tell me whom to contact? Thanks again. |

I am using the following computer, if I install VirtualBox will I have speed issues while running other programs & Apps?Very possibly- it is an extremely low performance system, and has to share it's system RAM with its on chip graphics. You could try it and see how it goes-it really will depend on what other things you are trying to do while processing the Python Tasks. Grant Darwin NT |

"You could try it and see how it goes-it really will depend on what other things you are trying to do while processing the Python Tasks." Grant, Thanks. In the past (since 2011) I have only run BOINC when my system(s) are not in use. So that probably won't be a problem. I have searched the FAQ and Forums for posts that mention VirtualBox and found very little. Perhaps you can help. I am running the latest BOINC version 7.16.20 for windows x86_64. It's a new computer as of Jan 2022, with a new install of BOINC. I do not recall an option for VirtualBox during the installation process. So, how do I get it? Thanks, Brian |
