I am home from work today and got kind of bored. I decided to let out my inner geek and I ended up creating the following graphic which compares the computational performance of the Rosetta@Home BOINC cluster to that of the computer of the fictional late 24th century Intrepid Class starship Voyager's computer core. Suffice to say, computing capabilities in the 24th star trek universe would make possible incredibly scientific progress.

Some interesting highlights:

  • USS Voyager's computer core would perform at over half-a-Billion PetaFLOPS
  • All calculations ever performed until now, across all BOINC projects (Excluding BU) could be crunched in just 3.51 seconds

I wonder how this type of computing horsepower would change the game for researchers if it suddenly became available tomorrow.
