Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier... I went and took a rest! :-)

Actually, the only difference _today_ has been that most of my time has been spent here, and I actually had threads that were 6 hours old unread over at SETI. Kept up with the Mac section, but not NC. It helps that I'm not even bothering to check Predictor and SZTAKI any more... and that the BOINC boards and Einstein have been fairly quiet. I've even had time to send and receive a few emails today. (Note to David Kim: did someone contact you about Mac OS X on Intel? Have two people working on the client and SETI, one was very interested in possibly porting Rosetta as well, I sent him your way a couple of weeks ago... and yes, that was relevant, as that's what some of the emails were about...)

My thanks go to _everybody_ who is "chipping in and helping out". These problems probably came at the worst possible time - right after SETI Classic and FindADrug closing, and right as everyone is off for the holidays with nothing else to do but watch their new BOINC credits. I bet the Rosetta folks have learned their lesson, right Jack? :-)

If I didn't enjoy it, or had something "more important" to do, I wouldn't be here. Still, it naturally feels good to be appreciated. Now, as one of my ex-bosses used to say - "Break is over, back on your heads!"

I'd like to think Rosetta has learned its lesson. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that we will be able to demonstrate that until after the holidays. David Baker doesn't even know all of this is going on, luckily for him. When he gets back you can be sure that he will see to it that the resources are allocated to put safeguards in place. And he probably won't ever again add a bunch of new jobs to the queue just before going out the door, saying "See you next year!" :)

It's just one of those things you have to deal with.

Murphy's law, or at least that part that say that not only are things guaranteed to go wrong, they are also guaranteed to go wrong at the worst possible time.

RL example of this. Monday morning, my wife saw water on the floor of the garage as she was leaving for work. Hauled me out, and we looked at the roof (it was raining at the time). No leak there. Finally traced it to the hot water heater - big puddle of water. Turned off the water supply to heater, and stopped the leak. No hot water in the house, of course. :)

Tuesday, plumber comes out, and after about 15 minutes looking at it says that the heater needs to be replaced. Doesn't have a spare 75 gallon one in the truck, so he'll have to come back Wednesday to do the work. So last night was the first time I'd managed to take a shower in 48 hours or so - yeugh!

Looking at Rosetta, it could be worse. We'll get through this, and look back fondly on Christmas 2005 as a time of trouble, and raise our glasses to the beast we dealt with.

Just wanted to give a tip of the hat to Bill, River~~, Paul and all the others for all the time they give here. Also a big thanks to to the project people - David Baker, David Kim, Jack Schonbrun and the other project scientists (sorry I don't remember you names at the moment) who keep us all well imformed about what's going on behind the scenes and try to explain all this biology to us non-biologists in a way that we can understand. I think 30+ years of reading Scientific American and slogging through as much as possible has finally paid off. Having a chemistry background doens't hurt, either.
